Watch!

“Hello.  I’m Tony the Hawk.  When I chased this squirrel, this is what happened.  Once I saw my dinner, I flew after it.  I watched it like a hawk.  I heard squealing.”  “Help me!  Help me!” cried the squirrel.  “I smelled fear!  I felt hungry.  Very hungry.  I was getting hungrier by the second.  I wonder if that squirrel was hungry.  Well, anyway.  Although he escaped, I smelled victory!”  “So, how did you like the show and interview?”

Lincoln City

During Winter Break I went to Lincoln City.  Lincoln City is about a two hour drive from Portland.  We play a lot of board games like Rummy Cube and Stretego.  My family often goes to the beach.  We make sand castles and throw footballs. It’s really fun down in Lincoln City.  Have a good day.

All About Alevin

Do you wanna learn about alevin?  Alevin are about 1 inch long.  They have tiny tails and no fins when they hatch, and a yolk sac attached to their stomach.  They live in a redd.  There has to be a lot of woody debris because they have to be camouflaged.  They can’t go far out of the redd or else they will get eaten by predators.  Alevin have a yolk sac that acts like a lunch box and gives them food.  Many predators eat alevin.  Fish and birds also eat alevin.  Some predators are Blue Heron and Trout.  Did you know that different types of alevin look very different.  Alevin are pretty cool.  Go alevin!

Coho Salmon Alevin

Salmon Eggs

The first stage in the  life cycle of salmon is egg.  The egg is about the size of a pea.  It is soft and an orangish-red color.  The egg has two black dots that are it’s eyes.  The eggs needs to be in cool water that’s around 50 degrees.  They are layed by the female in a redd (a salmon nest).  Trees along the stream provide shade to keep the water cool, and to help stop erosion (soil in the water).  The eggs are hidden in the rocky gravel to protect them from predators.

Each egg contains an embryo (baby salmon).  There is a yolk sac attached to each embryo.  The yolk sac holds yolk, which is the embryo’s food.  Some predators are birds and trout.  They will eat the egg.  Birds such as ducks and fish such as trout will eat salmon egg for lunch.  Did you know only 3 out of 3,000 salmon survive to be adult salmon.
